This Saturday, 8th December, a conference on the Maritime Heritage of the Gulf of Saint-Florent took place

Three speakers presented their research and work carried out in the Gulf of Saint-Florent:

? Charles Pinelli gave a presentation on underwater archaeology, explaining the research methods applied in the Gulf of Saint-Florent. According to historical accounts, numerous shipwrecks could potentially be found a few metres beneath our feet.

? Arnaud Cazenave de la Roche is part of a team of volunteer archaeologists who have been studying a shipwreck located near the Mortella Tower, named «Mortella III», for over 10 years. The study of this wreck, situated at a depth of over 30 metres, has enabled several datings over the years, particularly by examining the hull and construction timbers. This wreck is believed to have burned before sinking in the Gulf of Saint-Florent.

An account by the Bishop of Corsica, Agostino Giustiniani, made it possible to discover that the boat was deliberately sunk by its crew in order to save the cargo it contained by fleeing by land. The ship being becalmed, it saw galleys approaching dangerously, and preferred to save what could be saved and burn the boat so that it would not fall into the hands of the enemy.
