History recap:
The 14th of July is the national holiday of the French Republic. It is a public holiday in France.
The law making July 14th an annual national holiday was enacted on July 6th, 1880. While July 14th is generally associated with the Storming of the Bastille in 1789, it is in fact July 14th, 1790, the Fête de la Fédération, that has been officially commemorated in France for over a century.
Whether we think of 14th July 1789 or 14th July 1790, the date of 14th July marks the Republic's adherence to Human Rights and the rejection of all despotisms.« The fall of the Bastille is the fall of all Bastilles [...], exclaims Victor Hugo to the Assembly on the eve of the vote on the law [...]. July 14th marks the end of all enslavements; it is the festival of all nations.«
