Today, we received staff from the company Ecocean who came to present and install Biohut® units throughout the port. To find out more, click on the photo.
Biohut® is an artificial habitat that helps to rehabilitate the nursery ecological function of shallow rocky and sandy seabeds which have been degraded by the construction of coastal developments (ports, outfalls, offshore wind farms etc).
The process aims to restore the nursery ecosystem service by protecting post-larvae and juvenile recruits from predation, thereby allowing them to reach «refuge size» and effectively contribute to the increase of the adult population.
In a natural environment, fish depend on favourable habitats throughout their different developmental stages. Shallow nearshore areas are essential in this cycle. However, coastal developments today are impacting the nursery function of shallow areas by profoundly altering the essential habitat for larvae. This pressure leads to a decline in adult populations.
The role of Biohut® is to replace the nursery that is outsourced by humans, thereby enabling the natural cycle to be re-established. This eco-service contributes to the restoration of the ecosystem.
Thanks to the different types of Biohut offered by Ecocean, quays, jetties, and coastal structures are once again becoming biodiversity refuges for many coastal marine species.
